S Y S T E M FROM
OLD TO NEW
If you change from an old scoring system to the
Scorer#1, you may wish
to use the existing movecards and
table cards.
To this end you must check. wether the exixting
movements inside the
part "create an edit movements" correspond to
the old material you have.
Help is done by print out of the movement pattern
of each movement.
The actual scorer#1 may contain a lot of movements
which are of not use to you.
Delete them any time. Other non-existing movements
you use can be incorporated,
lokk for details "MOVEMENT"
The scorer#1 shows and prints movement matrixes
and "movecards" ad libitum.
The physcal size can be altered.
If you transfer the scorer#1 pages (with
movecards on it) to excell, then you have
additional possibilities: you may add club information,
colourmarks etc and
make cards bigger or smaller.
Movecards are plastified for repeatd use in specail
shops.

OPERATING
SYSTEM
The scoring system Scorer#1 is based on
Microsfts Operating System windows,
vers. 95, 98, NT , xp, and excell
vers. 2000.
The user of the Scorer#1 should be able to operate
the systems mentioned above,
andl the usual writng software.
The knowlegde of the Law of Duplicate Contract
Bridge is essential to operate the
full scale of the scorer#1 possibilities.
The Scorer#1 makes use of the usual windows
facilities and symbols.
Some subfunctions operate on excell.
If you intend to change the language, go to box tools >>preferences
on start page.
BRIDGE RULES
The scoring software scorer#1 is based on the
Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge, short:
the "LAW " (see Internet for it) and
additional rules setup by national bodies, by
rules set up by practical use,
as long as these do not interfere with the LAW.
This software benefits from a profound study
of the possibilities given by the LAW
the tecnical development of the EDV (Electrical
Data Processing),
and other sources like "Bridge movements" ISBN
91 8502 486-4.
You are free to use this software under the "license
conditions" of the scorer#1.

TYPE OF GAME : MAKE
YOUR CHOICE
The TD (Tournament Director) may order one of the following types:
Fortuitousness may be excluded by Mitchell
Movement or play from
both sides.
1 Matchpoint tournaments conf. LAW 78A
Strategie: to have a higher result than others is sufficient.
Scores will be compared and MP are given by the method better-equal-inferior;
Each board has a restricted influence to the winners list ( 4% when
25 boards are played).
All non-scorers get the same amount of MP = classic matchpointing.
Configuration: zero-score/ unilateral/ 1/2 point
2) IMP pair tournaments (Butler)
Strategie: to get a high score, smal score differences are often of
no importance.
Scores will be compared to the middle score-value of each board
(median),
and the difference is tranformed into IMP.
Each board could be decisive for the general result (winners list)
Configuration: IMP-mode zeroscore/unilateral
3) TP pair tournaments (Total Point scoring) conf.LAW
78C
No transformation of scores, simple additon of scores
4) Matchpoint tournaments conf. LAW 78C
The same as No 1 but winner finding is by old configuration;
Not just, not supported by 2007LAW
Configuration: reciprok/ biilateral/ 1/2 point
See: interpretation of the LAW
See:INTERPRETATION OF THE LAW
5) Individual tournaments
6) Team-of-four events by LAW78 B (International Matchpoint Scoring)
handled by the scoring system scorer#2 ( not
treated here)
The TD tells his customers his choice and makes the necassary
provisions
Starts the PC and opens the Scorer#1, " start page" and " create
new tournament".
( see Example, make tournamntent).
Preparatory works are possible, among other things the
input of several “empty” tournaments (no scores) for later choice.
SIT IN TABLE / HALF TABLE
Nearly ervery second event knows a half-table, one opponent is missing,
sometimes called "Phantom pair".
The number of this pair and its opponent shows in the screen view of
all boards,
by automatic taken from the movement. There is the danger of
writing into this
space, except the scorer#1 gives help.
If all pairs "play" against the phantom-pair, the score input (or substitute)
may be
handled in the same way, i.e. give both a zero score (example).
But if not all sit against Phantom, the "sitters" must receive an MP
equivalent.
Nobody knows the result, if the deal "Player against Phantom" had been
played,
therefore a "just" equivalent is difficult to find.
W i t h o u t a u t o m a t i c :
A most simple way to handle "half tables" is to take the phantom as
real existant.
Start a normal movement, open the board pages, go to all boards and
give the
value zero-zero to both contestants by use of "F3". In the winner list,
the phantom-pair
will show litte MP, which will not harm anyone. Recommended for cases,
when
every pair sits. Take care not to overwrite the preestablished zero-zeros.
A most perfect way to handle is to use "F2" for creating 50-50% values
for both
sides, conforme LAW12. In this case the phantom-pair will show 50%MP
in the
winners list.
A u t o m a t i c
The scorer#1 employs an automatic device which shows, when confuguration
is made, under "scoring/functions". It must be operated before the
other entries for the
tournamnet are made, or else will be blocked. There are several modi
as follows:
MP mode / name number of phantom pair / selecct sit method:
average
The opponent of the phantom-pair gets 50% of theMP made by all winners,
if he had
played on the winners side, or 50% of the loosers side, if he had played
there.
MP mode / name number of phantom pair/ select sit method: out
Both contestants get the minimum possible of MP.
MP mode / name number of phantom pair / select
sit method: MP % winners list
Both contestants start getting the minimum possible of MP inside
the normal board
( this effects the correct MP calculation of the other contestants
in this board.)
All sitting real contestants receive an MP equivalent, which
is shown in the
winners list, rightside part, in separate.
I M P mode / name number of phantom pair/ selecct sit method: average
Both contestants get the minimum possible of MP.
I M P mode / name number of phantom pair / select
sit method: MP % winners list
Both contestants start getting a zero-zero score.
All sitting real contestants receive an IMP equivalent, which
is shown in the
winners list, rightside part, in separate.
If during an event a pair disappears and a half table remains,
the input in
the boards might be handled by key F6. Wether the score for the disappeared
contetstant is valid, is the TD decision. He might aply minusMP.
MISSING / CORRUPTED SCORES
/ BOARDS
It happens sometimes - some say often - that scores are not valid (corrupted),
even complete boards disappear. The LAW says, that the tournament manager
has to "create" scores to take the place of the corrupted ones. Whithout,
a just
result could not be found. See Law12.
In IMP tournaments, such scores must be created. The Scores#1
has a ready made
recommendation for the different types of play:
part score, game and slams.
They appear by klick on a Icon top of the open boards side.
IMP values can be created directly and
booked in the right side part
of any board-screen ( direcly = without connected scores )
In MP tournaments it seems sufficient to give MP in place of
a real score, by the words
of Law12; but the created score is still needed to ensure the
correct calculation
of the other scores in the affected board.
National Bridge authorities may have recommended rules to this.
This procedure leads to a split up of the processing system:
I n s i d e e a c h b o a r d, the leftside
part shows MPs calculted by the scores;
and the right side MP calculted by the tournament manager or automatically
by system.
I n s i d e the w i n n e r s l i s t the "scoreMP"
and the "managerMP" are shown
in separate and finally added to "MP all"
In a closed system like the Scorer#1 - similar to a bookkeeping programm
- it is
not allowed to leave space blanc: if a score is missig, some score
or some
indicating sign must be found.
Special cases F2 - F9
To all these cases, the Scorer#1 uses pop-down menus.
F2 input
of MP/Scores by key F2
Based on the scale "one side guilty and the other not, or both not guilty"
the TD fixes MP on a 40%
- 50% - 60% caculation.
F3 input
of MP/Scores by key F3
Pass-Pass, both sides get a zero Score (0)
F4
input of MP/Scores by key F4
HALF TABLE not automatic. Both pairs ( one pair phantom) will get
the lowest possible score and MP must be fixed by hand.
The MP column will show zero MP.
F6 input
of MP/Scores by key F6
Average 50% The system calculates the average ot the board.
F7 input of
MP/Scores by key F7
Split scores, any value plus or minus, each side, must be put
in by
the user. The system will use the values for calculation of MP.
The following cases are not based
on missig/corrupted and are shown
her for practical rerasons.
F8 input
of MP/Scores by key F8
Deal-input F8 will produce a menu to put in the details of the
deal used for the board shown .
The fourth side can be put in by automatic.
F9
shows a deal in real cards
shows a virtual table with cards on it.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
F O U L E D B O A R D S (big ones)
The LAW prescribes a special procedure in case of fouled
boards (LAW87). If
two or more identical groups (sub-group) may be recognised,
which played
the same distribution (deal), then each group has to
be evaluated in separate, but the total importance of
matchpoints given
must be the same, as if this board were regular.
The scorer#1 offers regular devices to give a modern solution
to this task.
They are based on the fact, that the scorer#1 calculates
MP if only part
of the “pair against pair” results are booked inside
any board.
Simply start a new tournament, call it test, and
use some boards to
calculate MP for the different groups.
These part results can be transferred to excel files,
where the full scope
of mathematical operations is available.

HOW TO PUT IN RESULTS
Basis of all input are the handmade minutes of all Board travelers or
the
decision of the TD in case of corrupted scores.
The velocity of input depends on operator abilities !
Choices while configuration is done or inside each board:
1) suppresses the last figure ( always zero) Default
2) input of all figures of the score value ( i.e.120, -630)
Two ways of "putting in " into boards :

tournaments at the same time (event, contest):
If several tournaments are played as part of a event,
and each tournament
has been registered under a different name, than the
Scorer#1 offers the possibility
to switch for data input between these tournaments without
delay (fast-switch).
To this end please operate the arrow at the right side
of the tournament box upper side right.
D E L E T E : use the red cross to extinguish tournament data.
In the average club, the players list is handmade when
players turn in
(incl. evidence of payment).
The players list provided by the scorer#1 contains
"generic names"
( player No 1, player No.2 ...etc ) which may be used
troughout the whole tournament.
Sometimes players like to stay anonymous: you may write
the names of the
upper part of the ranking list after the event has terminated
The input of real names may be done at any time ( before,
during and after
tournament).
The scorer#1 displays a "permanent list", which may be
operated when the
"players list" is open.
This device serves to facilitate the correct lettering
of names and/or to
store actual ranking indices ( A, B,..etc.). For transfer
of a name out of
the "permanent" to the actual players list use the mouse,
marking and
clicking the indicated operating cells.
Classification of players should could be put in before
configuration is
terminated , but may be changed after tournaments end.
Classification works under the condition that all names
are classified. !!
Code for Pairs/Players are entered as ”name”
Stratification (ABCL): Stratified winners lists
need classifiaction for all
pairs ( will show empy if not ). Select method
of combined pairs ( i.e.player1 is A, player 2 is C)
in the "Home" page
(OPTIONS), before ending configuration.
Stratification is an ACBL
procedure to award Club-Points to members.
Separation (YZ) The use of the letters Y and Z
creates a list where
Players are enter in list Y or list Z. This procedure
serves for
Two-club-competitions, and others.
C O N F L I C T between "all pass" / "penalty"
/ "phantom" in MP events
If all three or two of these categories show inside the
same board, the the
phantom pair and the phantom opponent will earn Matchpoints
of very small value.
These MP values must be taken into account when applying
*****
CONFIGURATION
If you start a new tournament and you make the
choice of the movement, you
are already in the part Configuration of he Scorer#1.
( if you operate "somewhere" inside the Scorer#1,
click on the rider Configuration
will open this part)
Inside Configuration the user must make all provisions
for the curent tournament:
indicate
* the movement; See chapter
*
*starting a tournament
* the name of the tournament, at choice.
* wether an IMP or an MP event is played;
* the way how non-scorers are handled ;
(2008: default is zeroscore unilateral)
** For Classic
Matchpointing click Zeroscore/unilateral/1/2 point. Within a board
the non-scorers will have the same amount of MP
** For Reciproc Matchpointing
click reciproC/bilateral/1point. This is the game played
in most MP pair events up to (2007). Within a board, the non-scorers have
individual MP as result of awarding the difference between a top
and the MP
awarded to his oppopnent. Not supported by 2007LAW.
* take over prefixed deals, if desired;
* make provisions for half tables;
* fix the details for providing club points.
(default possioble)
The players list can be made now or later, as
verybody has a generic name.
There is a permanent list, where a club lists
his usual menbers.
DIVISION BY CLASS
Each player/pair might be connected to his class
inside the players list.
They are ABC for ACBL stratification, or
XY for any distintion - i.e. different clubs
in inter-club events.

and click export.
The system will create a "ass" file inside the
export folder. This file contains
all data of the tournament. This file may be
transferred with the usual
windows means, as sticks or diskette,to other
places inside or ouside your system;
UPLOAD to the provider for INTERNET
presence
The Scorer#1 does not provide a system for internet
operation nor the
necessary knowlege. This is up to the Bridge
Club. You need a
webhosting-provider , basic knowledge of web-publishing
and the HTML
system.
The Scorer#1 provides the desired informations
in a qualified format to
be published in the Internet,
Objective 1 : to publish in the Internet
the complete set of an tournament held,
to be taken over into the PC of the clubmembers.
By this, the user at home can replay with the
help of playback (part of the scorer#1).
He may book a newscore in any board - case of
misscoring - and see the influence
to the total ( winners list).
After restart you will find the desired tournament
on the start page under
"Old tournaments". Click on this will open a
menu wehre all tournamenst are listed.
Now clik thedesired an then button "Export".
Put in the name into the menu
which now opens and "store".
Then transform this into a ZIP format.
Have this file transferred to your place at the
provider.
Indicate wehre in your Internet Place this file
can be downloaded and do the link
procedure.
State of the art at Juno 2008:
You need a ZIP programm as provided by http://www.winzip.com
(cost about € 40.-)
to do the transformation.
Provider offer their own upload-system, but
you may use the system
of www.ipswitch.com.
Objective 2 : Clubmembers shall read
the results of the last tournament in the Internet.
Open the Scorer#1 page with the desired
information. It show on the screen.
Now click the Excell Icon in the Top row (blue,
a crossed x), and the file Export
of the scorer#1 opens, now give a name and click
store. The system
aks "show excel-file now ?" click yes and the
system prooces this excel file.
(stored in the export folder, acces also from
start page)
You can write into this file. Apply the missing informations.
Then copy the desired information and put this to any word application
by copy.
( windows carries : programs/accessories/wordpad).
Make a HTML file by storing anew and transfer this to your place
at the provider.
Indicate wehre in your Internet Place this file
can be downloaded and do the link
procedure.
Objectice 3 : see
all boards in the internet.
By click on the HTML icon ( top bar, board open) the system creates
a
continous stream of all board of a specific session as HTML file.
Then have direct transfer to the web provider. (up from version 2.1.4
/2007)
EXPORT to EXCELL
All tables resp the data as shown on the screen
may be stored as an excell-file.
From there, they serve as input for all
kinds of other programms.
To store use the excell-Symbol in the top row
of the open main page
The Scorer#1 stores the excell files in a file
wich is part of the scorer-path,
or, at wish, in any file you indicate.
The start page shows the folder (box)
rightside/up. If you click there, you will
see all excell files previous stored.
UNITED LISTING
United Listing is an executable excell table,
where results (name,MP) of different
events might be stored and summed up.
The values of each event can be transformed by
multiplcation/division to match
a givern standard, i.e.12 tables.
UL has an own INFO part inside.
IMPORT
The scorer#1 has various places (buttons) to
import files, but they
need to have "ass" format.
G E N E R A L O B S E R V A T I O N S
Definition: MOVEMENT
If we have more than one table, we must tell all players
where to
play (table), when to play (round), which direction (NS
or EW), their guide
card numbers and which board(s) .
Within a movement for the same number of tables, rounds
and boards, there are
variations and specific sub-types, they carry own names.
Examples:.:A given pair may stay at a specific table
throughout the whole tournament
or change tables only once. Boards may appear at a specific
table
( i.e. the TD's table) in a sequence, which makes recognition
of correct procedure easier.
Pair move one (number)
up; boards move one down.
Pairs move
down two,, boards move down one.
GENERIC NAME
Within any movement, each pair has its generic name:
pair No.1;
pair No.2; pair No.3; ... or team No.1; teamNo.2,....
etc. This way, pairs
may stay anonymous, if they wish.
BALANCE
The act of linking real pairs to a generic Name (number)
- in other
words: handing out the guide-cards - determines the opponents.
Thus, it
fixes whether a pair meets strong or weak opponents.
In average club life
participants like to play a mixture of strong, average
and weak opponents.
If, by order of the movement, each pair meets all other
pairs and plays all
boards, the tournament is said to be fully balanced.
If thereis a phantom-pair, the movement is not balanced.
If not all pairs "play"
against the phantom-pair, matchpoint counting needs to
be adjusted for
these pairs.
MATRIX
All movements are defined and described with the help
of a matrix
as follows:
The matrix has a row (line) for each round and a column
for each table.
Within the space for each table/round a group of three
symbols
(characters or numbers) is shown.
- the first is the number of the pair playing NS;
- the second indicates the set of boards in play;
- the third is the number of the pair playing EW.
Tables for individual events are different as follows:
Each contestant carrys a complete pair-number.
Tables have a two-digit number, but in the Matrix they
show separate for each digit. The same goes for the
movement cards.
You max construct more perfekt movement cards with the
help
of the excell transfer device.
Within the part CONFIGURATION the matrix and
the individual
"move cards/ guide cards" are shown and may be printed.
A "move card" is given
to each player at the beginning of an event and says
when where
to go and the number of the opponent pair.
BOARD SHARING
The making of sets is a helpful method when
board-sharing is needed ( the same
boards are played within the same round at two ( or more)
tables.
DENOMINATION OF MOVEMENTS
There is no public known standard which governs
the names of all types of movement.
There are only two specific types of Pair Movements:
= MICHEL type : a pair sits NS or EW all the time
# HOWELL type : a pair chnages saets from NS to EW and
vice versa.
The so called "scrambled mitchel movemens" are Howell
type and carry # frontside.
P = pattern. Refers to stored types of tournament, where
a certain type of
movement is used.
SEQUENCE OF NUMBERS
Within a matrix, numbers of pairs will follow each other
( row, 1,2,3,...) or will be split in sections ( start
row 1,2,3...
and 20,21,22 ... split row).
Split numbers are preferred in tournaments where the
movement
contains two or more groups playing duplicated board
sets.
(avoids mistaking board numbers).
The Scorer#1 will ask the user at the start of a tournament,
wether
he likes other (split) numbers; and offers a menu to
have numbers changed.
M O S T U S E D M O V E M E N T S
The most used movements are already stored in this software.
Click "preparing movements" on startpage. A table will
show containing all
movements stored ( headed: Select an existing movement
or "Empty" for
a new movement).
Attention: the pop-down menü "tournament patters"
will hold all tournament patterns you
create. So there may be a mix of own movements and split-number
movements.
STANDARD MOVE
Tournaments of the Mitchell type usually follow a pattern
as follows:
pairs move one (table) up, boards move one table dawn.
This movement works unconditionally when the number of
tables is uneven ( 5,7,9,...)
If the number of tables is even (6,8,10...), pairs must
leave out (skip)
one table in the middle of the tournament. Or else a
pair will play the same
board again. The number of rounds is one short to the
number of tables
for the same reason.
This type of movement is called standard in this application.
Pairs move by TD's instruction
If players are accustomed to move by word of the Tournament
Director,
there is no need to hand out guide cards.
If it is the custom within a club to use higher numbers
for EW pairs
(i.e.: NS 1-8, EW 21-28), then the transformation of
the EW numbers
(out of the original basic movement) may be done when
the play is over.
Or there is no transformation at all and the put in of
scores is made
based on the NS numbers only.
You may have the NS numbers in a numerical order in the
board-masks
when so indicated in the configuration part of the ASSI.
If you use a US type of board traveler, they show scores
arranged by
numerical order of the NS pairs.

( How to make use of exixting guide cards)
New movements ( by matrix ) might be produced with the
help of features offered in
this software, part "preparing movements" (home page).
Click on this box will show the menu " select an existing
...or...". Then click on the
box right upper side " empty" and a tableau (excell type)
will open. Put in the data
of the new matrix and follow instructions given in this
menu.
Or use an existing matrix and click on one of the figures
inside the matrix. The
matrix will then be ready for alteration ( and needs
a new name for the movement).
Click on the box "board numbers" will display the choosen
numbers of all boards.
Tables of the matrix are "Excell" type tables, they work
under the same conditions.
To put in data, click one of the cells.
The system will recognise and report errors, if data
of the new matrix are not correct.
You may trace errors by looking at the screen-picture
"movement cards", where
incorrect cards remain in blanc.

SPLIT NUMBER MOVEMENTS
These movements might be created by alteration of the
basic movement
while making a new tournament pattern.
Start to create a new tournament with "basic movement"
of the same
size (identical tables/rounds/Bds.p.rd). In the course
of preparation
the matrix is shown and the system will ask : change
numbers? : Then
you clik yes and the system will show a menu where you
declare the
desired start-numbers.
In general, this type of matrix will be prepared for permanent
use. Consequently,
a tournament based on this split-number movement will
be booked as pattern
and all the guide cards will be printed and plastified
for later use.
If TD and players are acustomed to play this type of
movement (and players
follow instructions given by theTD ), there is no need
of guide cards. In
consequece, the alteration of the original basic matrix
to a split-number
matrix might be effected immediately before play starts.
P R O D U C T I O N O F
G U I D E C A R D S
The system shows and prints a Tableau of
all guide cards for any movement.
As printers are different, the same file (of the Scorer)
may result
to different print-out in form and size.
Recommended: plastifying ( look for local shops) for permanent use.

CLUB POINTS
This software shows CP (Club Points) as follows
1) CP will be calculated by automatic. Two tables will
serve to this end,
both must be choosen when configuration is made. If the
values already
contained in this software are to be altered - by order
of national
organisation or if you prefer an own system - this
may be done by overwriting the
values in the tables.
2) Automatically calculated CP can be overwritten manually
in the winners list.
The auto-calculating of other CP will be kept. All manually
entered
CP can be calculated automatically again by clicking
‘Clear manual CP’.
3) This System carries CP tables for ACBL, EBU, DBV, and
a special
CLUB-OWN-System, to have Clubs create their own System.
All values shown are subjct to alterations any time.
H a n d l i n g
Page configuration carries a separate subpage "CP-assistant,
where you give the system
the necessary instructions. These are valid for all future
tournaments.and will not be stored as part of the given
tournament. Stored are:
* CP tables of different content ( by nation),
but separated by Howell and Mitchell system.
* Two buttons named "edit" to make alterations
inside the tables by overwriting.
There is no need to put in the value of "zero", no entry or after
delete creates zero.
* The button "create new schedule" will allow the
existence of newmade tables.
* The button "delete table" will work only for
such selfmade tables.
* "expanded option" gives oportunity to add tables, make multiplication
an

INTERPRETATION OF THE LAW
Fundamentals for Tournament Organisers
The 2007 Laws of Duplicate Bridge provide
revised instructions for methods of scoring and
determination of winters. This leads
to a revival of the original form of matchpoint-tournaments,
as some methods of the past are not supported.
BASIC SCORING IN MATCHPOINT EVENTS
In classic MP-events, your action is free and not subject to unjust
regulations.
You know that the actual event is done in accordance with what is fair
and that the winners list
shows the right succession.
In bidding, you may be more active and try to defend.
Case you go down your opponent wins but does not make a top.
The inventors of duplicate
decided this way, to avoid unjust influence by high scores in
result of a luky lead or an unusual distribution.
As opponent, your action will show in the score the declarer makes,
but you still get some MP :
namely the same amount of MPs as the other non-scorers in the board.
This is because your
zero-score is compared to the other zero-score in the board.
One more important effect : the beginner must not fear to play against
a “big shot “.
Not supported form see "common faults" below.
How ill you know that the calculation is correct ?
Computer figures do not reveal the way they were made. To find out,
you must get a board
where the MP have alrady been calculated. If inside this board all
non-scorers have the same
amount of MP, than winner finding is ok and corresponds to the
new LAW.
If not, the way of winner finding is not correct.
The powers of the club
The 2007 LAW provides explicit, that a club acting as "tournament
organiser" must set and publish
the methods of scoring and determination of the winner.
The club may establish other scoring methods, but these must not conflict
with the law or regulation.
The law gives as example "victory point" systems, but half-table regulations,
"butler" scoring ,
the "summing up of sessions" might as well considered as "other"
methods.
But how will the Organiser resp. TL know, that the LAW is followed ?
To this end we must know the principle of winner
finding within the duplicated brigde game.
The priciple of winner determination
Duplicate bridge has a very simple principle: t h e h i
g h e s t s c o r e w i n s.
If scores are transformed to IMP or MP, than the highest score must
produce the highest MP resp. IMP value.
How calculation of scores is done says the LAW 77. One side gets a
score of 50 or more, and the other side a
zero Score.
In case of missing or corrupt scores , the TL must create a score.
In case of pass from both sides we now find the rule at the end of
LAW77.
For the transformation into MP and IMP the LAW provides strict converting
rules in § 78A and B,
and no other converting systems are permitted.
C o m m o n f a u l t s
The general aspect of scoring methods and determination
of winner is rather simple and easy understood,
7but if it comes to details as missing
scores or corrupt actions, only few persons are perfect.
( double evaluation) In the first years of the computer age,
the expert who wrote programms belived that,
if two pais compete, there is only one result, the score of the winner.
They felt the necessity to compensate
and decided to give the looser MP as well. The amount was
calculated as " difference between the top-MP-value
of the board , and the MP actually gained by the winner." .
The same happened in the aerea of hand made MP. The board travelers
showed no scores for the looser,
and it was a simple procedure to give them MP as difference to the
top of a board.
There was no provision in the LAW to do this, but it was done nevertheless.
Besides, it was very easy to put this into code: all you had to do
was to employ the " negative Scorevalue" for
the looser.
This procedure gives little MP to the "looser", if the winner makes
a high score. (This might be the case if your oponent makes
a lonenly slam, where you had not the sligtest possibility to intervene.)
It gives fat MP to the opponent, where the newcomer
contracts only part game. In both and all other cases the outcome is
not the result of the other sides action, and
is sim ply unjust.
( left & right separate) Another common misinterpretation
of the LAW was to evaluate the left and the right
side of a board in separate. The effect of this might produce
a top MP value for a simples "one down", which is 50 or 1oo score.
This is against the winning principle of Duplicate.
The origin of this procerure has not yet been discussed.
The result is instability in the outcome of the ranking list and depends
of the distribution of high/low cards of all deals played.
( formula use) One more misinterpretation results from the fact
of not knowing LAW 12, or simply misunderstanding..
If a score was missing or corrupt, the former programmers used
a formula (Neuberg) to calculate to correct MP
value for all other contestants in the defect board.
This produces approximation errors, and does not follow the LAW. The
winners list is incorrect.
The correct solution in modern programming is to give the lowest possible
score
and MP according LAW12 at the same time.
*PLAYBACK F 9
Playback is a device to help teachers to show real played
deals on the screen.
Teachers and players may use this screen for analysis.
F9 uses the modern technical facilities to have a second
screen, when input is
done on the laptop. This second might be a bigger display
or a TV-station.
Both a board and the winners list will be shown on the
same screen.
Use the "smily icons " ; top row of the opened boards.
To do input with open board and winners lis at the same
time on screen
will please your pupils or event players : "the
bridge show"
The user might take advantage of other devices or functions
offered by
the "Operating System" and other additional programs,
i.e. "write" to
make and store "screenshots" of the dealcards. Key
F 9 will open a virtual table
where the cards of the deal are shown ( under the condition
that the board shows
a deal ). User may make a screenshot by the button shown,
and do more
screenshots showing different pictures of a downworked
deal.
Ready made shots can be reached by the START side
as well.
Screenshots are picturees of 2 MB an reside in
a own folder, where "delete"
might be done.
Paul Hauff recommends to elaborate "teachers tournaments",
where
exotic and other interesting deals are stored inside
the Scorer#1, to
be presented anytime. Teachers will use playback to show
and comment
deals played last day, or any other.
Players might replay what they have done in events. If
a board shows
no deal, but the details are know elsewehre, you may
put the deal in by key f8.
You may construct your private collection of interesting
deals by making
a new tournament.
F9 operates only basic movements of cards on the screen
without any
implemented logic of the bridgegame, exept the
possibility to generat a "trick".
Player, opponent, trump or not, follow suit
etc. is all in your head.
You may move cards by mouse, key stgr and key shift,
to any place on the table.
Cards may be open on the table or go to the played
section ( won or lost).
Cards cannot move from the N sector to any other sector,
and vice-versa.

SIMULTAN TOURNAMENTS
The scorer#1 is linked to a scoring device called SimTool#1/
Ecats.
To operate this tool, you must open both the scorer#1
and the simtool#1/Ecats
Detailed informatio see the simtool Info part.
It is the modern EDP technique and the internet which
give you the chance to take part in
Simultaneous Events within your own club. But complex
evaluation programs and the adjoined
administration works are not gratis. As a general rule
you have to count on 4 US$ per person.
This low price is possible by the effect of rationalisation
of the EDP (Electrical Data processing).
Remember: there are no journeys to the place of tournament;
no overnight spending, etc..
Last not least in comparison to other ”big” events: the
known and familiar atmosphere in your
home club.
Simultaneous are offered in the information bulletins
of the national organisations.
But you may start an event of your choice, i.e. ”all
clubs of your county”.
The most known provider is ECats who invented the ”Ecats
Online Scoring System”, used by
the WBF and many national organisations to do simultan
tournaments.
The worldwide 2001 tournament of the WBF had 49 countrys
and 335 clubs as participants.
Quite sure, a club needs a PC-program to participate.
This software named ”Scorer#1”
has an additional program called ”ECatstool#1”, which
can be downloaded from the
internet.
The ”sponsoring Organisation” will provide the details
of handling for a a specific event.
Due to the inherent problems of scoring across the field,
all simultaneous events will exclude:
1) sit-in tables; 2) all pass in a board; 3) fouled boards;
4) penalty scores of any type, 5) split scores.
As the TD may award an adjusted score conf. LAW12, he
may by this find an adequate solution
the the cited cases 1 to 5.
In general, the simultaneous event is scored across the field and at the same time localy.

PRELAID BOARDS in tournaments
Players like to play based on computermade deals.
Instead of playing the first round, the distribution
of the pack to form the hands of the four
players is made with the help of of an outprint of the
deal.
Both pairs which lay a deal will get a 50% MP compensation.
Input of 50% is made via key [ F6 ] by the operator.
The player should write “50%” in the board sheets.
The scorer#1 has an automatic device to transfer a premade
set of deals into the boardmasks.
Each deal has a (sort of ) name and number for identification.
The movement cards are
given to the players, together with the empty printed
boardssheets – containing the deal.

DEALS played from NS and EW
see start page double&play for more information
Today, it is possible to eliminate fortuity in pair tournaments
by the use of Computer programms.
You play all deals from NS as well as from EW, costumary
12 bds on NS and, after a short intervall
of time, the second inning by 12 bds from EW. Lets call
this double-play.
The top player will immediately observe: that I know all
the cards.
If this were true, this knowlegde must enable him twice
to find the best bidding, the best contract,
the best lead, the possibilities to execute tue best
finessings.. And he can not relay on what his
opponents had done, they might have been wrong.
To do all this would be an extraordinary job, because
a player sees every card only a short time,
the very moment, when a card to a trick goes down to
the table, and disappears in a very short time
face down. Does all this give him advantage ? The answer
is no, because all player have
the same possibilities. What happens is an alteration
of conditions, bridge becomes more difficult.
But all the same, fortuity is eliminated.
Recognising a deal might be possible by the outer appearance
of a board case. The TD can avoid
this by having neutral board cases. Player might think
that board 17 carrys the same deal as board 1,
but the TD might have exchanged deal 17 with deal 24
or 27.
The idea to play double has been published first in the ACBL Bridge Bulletin, Dec. 1999
Playing from both sides needs a specialised movement.
This can be created with the "Movement" part of the scorer#1,
as any other movement device
The Scorer#1 offers ready made movements, in form of
"ass" files. They are listed by name
and mix with ordinary movements
